When I first saw this image on the cover of an Australian craft magazine, it stopped me in my tracks. I had no idea what I was looking at, but I knew that it was right up my alley. It’s Louise Hibbert’s “Radiolarian Vessel III” (1998), made from English sycamore, acrylic ink, polyester resin and acrylic texture paste. It reminded me instantly of the drawings of Ernst Haeckel, and is another excellent example of human craft inspired by the truly fascinating world of plankton.
Here is another picture from the same issue. Hibbert’s non-traditional combination of materials is perfect for these other worldly specimens. Looking at a picture, it us unclear what you are looking at, how large it is, or what it was made of. It looks entirely natural, yet totally unfamiliar, a combination that I seek to replicate in my own work.
